The Epic Split ad, featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme recently went viral, and rightly so. The ad hit a lot of the right notes.
They nailed the celebrity endorsement perfectly, with the ad showcasing all that makes Van Damme so popular in a way that is so intrinsically linked to the truck. That opening monologue? Its about Van Damme, obviously, but its about the truck as well. The execution? The ad lulls you in with the extreme close-shot, and then it zooms out revealing the complete absurdity of situation: a man is standing on the mirrors of two trucks which are going backwards.
The title of the video teases you with the idea of an epic split...but you're not quite sure how epic. Or maybe you have the faintest of ideas, but you just don't believe because it just sounds like such a stupid idea. And then, in his monologue, he says "most epic of splits", and the truck, with the grace of ballerinas, drift apart ever so slightly, making way for the most fucking epic of splits. The whole time, Enya croons in the background, as the sun sets, bathing the land in warm light.
Fucking awesome. Top-notch endorsement. Excellent link to what the product is trying to sell (it can steer pretty damn precisely). And unparalleled level of execution. Watch it now, if you haven't done so.
These ad happens to be part of a whole series done by Volvo. The ads are of similar nature - fun and daring, while highlighting the reliability of the Volvo, which forms the foundation of all the videos. There's also a teaser for The Epic Split video, which simply has to be seen.
